Each time a significant prize-giving event approaches, there’s always a clamor for introducing fresh award types to recognize unsung work and delight the hearts of fans who have specialized interests.
My colleague made the case advocating for terror-themed awards. That would rule. Equally deserving are tabletop games, representing someone's personal cause. Yet I need to apologize in advance for pushing forward since similar to blinkered fanatics, I have a cast-iron argument for why my demand is the most urgent and significant. The demand is this: It's essential to create an award type for logic-based games.
The Genre Classification Challenge
Categorizing art by genre isn't exact; opinions vary greatly, and inevitably spark debates and end in fuzzy definitions. It's understandable that cinema institutions steer clear of genre categories. Yet it remains a necessary evil within the realm of gaming, showing incredible range they barely qualify one unified medium.
For the full spectrum of achievement in video games to be recognized, and for games of all stripes to have a chance for representation, classification by type becomes crucial.
Existing Game Classification System
Leading game ceremonies currently feature award types recognizing Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Between them, these award types effectively encompass a lot of ground, making space possible for numerous titles.
Different situation exists for brain-teasing titles. There’s simply nowhere for their placement. Consider three of outstanding current releases, showing diverse approaches: the architectural riddles of one title, intense tile-matching of another game, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles from additional release. Which classification works within current classifications? Unfortunately, nowhere.
Acknowledgment Issues
Many instances occur of brilliant puzzle games launched regularly without proper recognition during gaming ceremonies, unless they happen to qualify classification types such as Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the extremely competitive small studio competitions.
- An iconic brain-teaser wasn’t nominated for anything during that awards season
- A different innovative game missed out that year
- Well-received sorting experience was overlooked recently
- Only a few logic titles scraped into small studio or handheld classifications
Significance of Puzzle Games
These are often modest productions, yet the craft in brain-teasers is of massive significance. Famous handheld logic titles rank among the most-played games in the world continuing this trend for an extended period.
The iconic tile-matching title competes with well-known building titles competing to become most purchased experience; it also contends for best game of all time. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks for gaming as medium, while interacting with almost every other genre.
Recommendation and Reasoning
Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter this problem. You could fill five nominees interesting, varied, worthy titles every year with ease — actually, with challenge, because you’d have to leave so many good games out.
To emphasize again, these represent titles without proper classification in important events. Logic title developers function at the challenging frontier game development, developing some of the purest expressions within interactive entertainment. Similar to movie stunt professionals, they merit acknowledgment. Don't make them wait 35 years.
