Pat Cummins Poised for a Key Part in Iconic Rivalry

Test match action

Pat Cummins has claimed 309 Test scalps in 71 appearances with an impressive average.

The Australian selection chief George Bailey has declared that skipper Cummins will play a "major part" in the upcoming England-Australia contest.

Rumors had circulated that the veteran bowler might be unavailable due to a persistent back stress problem that had not yet healed.

Earlier indications from the Australian camp suggested no official announcement had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the five-Test series kicking off on November 21 in Perth.

The selector shared that his recovery is on track and felt positive about his chances of participating.

"It's clear that time is getting short and multiple considerations at play, aside from his injury, but additional elements," he commented.

"It's positive. We firmly believe that he's going to play a key capacity. Hopefully starting in Perth. Otherwise, we'll reassess."

Previous Setbacks

Cummins was ruled out the ODI and T20 games against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals in the previous weeks after examinations confirmed a lower back issue.

There is a track record of recurring issues, with flare-ups in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 leading to absences from three Australian summers in a limited period.

Cummins stated he would be bold in recovery efforts in his comeback strategy to secure his spot for the Ashes.

Bailey noted that it was unclear if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his comeback but acknowledged it was "becoming urgent" for him to regain fitness for the opener.

Alternative Arrangements

If he's unavailable, former captain Steve Smith will take over the captaincy.

The talented all-rounder was recently pulled out from the ODI lineup for their one-day international series against the subcontinent side as a precautionary measure because of discomfort in his torso.

He labeled it as a "small issue and mentioned that Green will play in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "ideally positioned to be ready to bowl."

"Considerable effort has gone into creating the schedule for him to participate for the opening match as an dual-role player," the selector detailed.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the first two ODIs in any case. The way he swings the willow in shorter formats, should it hinder progress for another day, we opted to take a cautious route."
